Education
Our Athletic Training Residency is a non-degree-seeking opportunity focused on skill specialization building upon the foundational skills of the Athletic Trainer. Each resident will hone their knowledge and skills through intensive advanced practices in athletic training, clinical education programming, and secondary school/collegiate clinical assignments. Residents will select an emphasis track upon application and acceptance into the program. This is a 12-month appointment starting in July.
All residents must be BOC certified and licensed within Missouri before independent clinical appointment.
Hands-On Experience
We are proud to offer extensive hands-on experience. All residents are placed at schools and play an active role in the athletic programs and community. Each resident is the Head Athletic Trainer at their respective school and has complete autonomy. They are mentored and developed by the Athleticare Staff and Faculty as they navigate the transition to practice working through the clinical management of providing care for their respective student-athletes for all practices, games, and other sport-related events. They will grow experientially through the opportunity of developing and leading their own sports medicine program within their respective school interacting with students, coaches, administration, and parents along the way.
During the time Residents are not working within their school, they are working on-site with one of our staff specific to the residency track selected. They will be paired with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, registered dieticians, sports psychologists, and healthcare administrators and participate in the day-to-day operations focusing on their experimental development and practical application.
Our staff and partners are an excellent source of practical education in the sports medicine field and are committed to creating an environment that is supportive and contributes to experiential learning. Participants will gain a much deeper understanding of the sports medicine field while honing their practical skills and perfecting their “art”.
Advanced Experience
All residents are placed in one of our partnered schools and play an active role in the athletic programs and community. Each resident is the Head Athletic Trainer at their respective school and has complete autonomy. They are mentored and developed by the Athleticare Staff and Faculty as they navigate the transition to practice, working through the clinical management of providing care for their respective student-athletes for all practices, games, and other sport-related events.
Residents can expect their didactic experience to cover areas like leadership and administration within the healthcare setting, image reading and interpretation, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, sports injury assessment and prevention, nutrition, mental health, manual therapy techniques, and rehabilitation. More importantly, residents will be independent and work autonomously within their appointed school. They will grow experientially through the opportunity of developing and leading their own sports medicine program within their respective school, interacting with students, coaches, administration, and parents along the way.
We are dedicated to creating a supportive environment contributing to experiential learning through successes and failures. We want our Athletic Trainers not to fear failure, mistakes, or asking questions but to look at them as opportunities for growth. This creates an all-encompassing learning environment through which residents gain a deeper understanding of the sports medicine field and perfect their “art.”
